Originally I wanted to be a professional musician, so it was only out of sheer curiosity in 1982 that I auditioned as singer/actor for the Rock Theatre, a theatre company that was just established in Budapest at the time. Actually a named local theatre director, Gábor Miklós Kerényi referred me to the audition. I got admitted and joined a fun-loving, enthusiastic team of young actors and singers. With some of them, we are still close friends. We were soon forged into a real team through endless ballet lessons and speech courses, the routine theatre schooling. It was real fun to see some fellow rockers in the ballet room, though. At the Rock Theatre, I was given a great opportunity fairly soon – I got the title role in Starmakers, a famous Hungarian musical. Years later, I got to play a different role in the same piece, this time in English on a German tour. The Rock Theatre continued to play a decisive role in my life for many years, I got virtually dozens of title roles there.
What I am the most grateful for In 1986, I could play Jesus in Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar when the piece premiered in Hungary. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to get closer to Jesus through this wonderful role. I am grateful that I could play it many-many times later on.
The person of Jesus found me again since then, in a Hungarian piece titled “Maria’s Gospel” where I could form His role from a slightly different aspect. I feel lucky that I could play Jesus in three different ways in three different shows.
We also toured a lot internationally with the Rock Theatre. We performed the musical Dorian Gray in London where I had Basil Hallward’s role.
Then I played Jean Valjean in Les Miserables in Duisburg, Germany for over two years.
Right now I appear in a number of theatres, mainly in Hungary. E.g. I play the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera at the prestigious Madách Theatre in Budapest. Through the years I could also try myself in other acting fields: I played in operettas, opera films and in a film by Academy award-winning director István Szabó.
